The "COPPEROPOLIS" heritage sites

A number of sites of industrial heritage interest  have been identified along the  Tawe River Navigation by the Visit Wales "HERIAN" programme.

The Community Boat will link these to tell the story of Swansea's early  industrial development. These heritage sites are of world-class significance.

The National Waterfront Museum and Swansea Museum Floating Exhibits.

The new National Waterfront Museum will attract an estimated 250,000 visitors each year. The thinking behind "HERIAN" is that visitors should be encouraged to also visit the early industrial sites around Swansea.

The Community Boat is ideally placed to help visitors access the historic Transport and Copper sites in the lower Swansea Valley.

Visitors will benefit from a broader understanding of their heritage.  Local communities will benefit from increased visitor spending and, hopefully, extra jobs.

Swansea Docks

The Tawe River Navigation runs past the Ice Factory and "J Shed" buildings associated with Swansea's maritime past. In contrast, the new building - Technium - represents Swansea's future.

White Rock Copper Works

The view from Kilvey Hill of the copper works sites, with White Rock in the foreground.  This is a pleasant informal riverside park, with early industrial features to explore.

The Quay at White Rock. Sea going ships would come up the river navigation.

Hafod Copper Works

Approaching the Hafod works on the river.

Hafod engine houses - our industrial heritage at risk ?

The Vivian Engine Sheds once served the Hafod Copper Works.

Swansea Vale Railway

The preserved steam line is a short walk from the White Rock Bridge.

Morfa Quay

Another quay for sea-going vessels - shipping  products from the Morfa Copper Works.

Morfa Bridge

This used to carry railway trucks of copper slag to waste tips on the other side of the river. A section could be lifted to allow sailing ships to pass upstream.

And back at Swansea Waterfront ....

The former South Dock, now the busy Swansea Marina.

The former Prince of Wales Dock, which is being transformed by the exciting "SA1 SWANSEA WATERFRONT" development. Have a good look, it won't stay like this for much longer. Historic waterside buildings have already been refurbished and a considerable amount of new build is taking place.

There are plans for a direct waterlink to the Tawe River Navigation, when funding is available. This will enable the Swansea Community Boat to carry people from the SA1 Waterfront to the Liberty Stadium and other points along the Riverside.

As you can see, the Swansea Community Boat will provide access for visitors to a wide variety of sites that tell the story of Swansea's industrial heritage.
