Up South Wales Boat Show Project Partners Trip on Enfys The Boat

LATEST NEWS.

The Trust is planning to produce a trail guide showing the Copper Works, Transport and other Heritage sites along the Tawe River Navigation. It will highlight the importance of this world renowned crucible of the industrial revolution.

CADW has offered up to £1000 towards the costs, provided that match funding can be found. The Trust is delighted at this support from the respected custodian of the heritage in Wales. It is the first Welsh Assembly Government funding to be offered to the project.

The Trust is now looking forward to working with its community partners on this exciting project.

During the past few months, the Trust has undertaken a wide range of activities, mostly in preparation for securing the funding that is needed to get the project started.

In May 06, the Trust did a survey on the River Tawe to check that that it will be possible to turn a large boat at White Rock and Morfa Quay. Mike Bond, Swansea Marina Harbour Master, took us in the marina launch.

It must have been the wettest day of the year, but we managed to measure the width and depth of the river at the turning points. We proved that there was plenty of room to turn the type of vessel being considered for use as the Swansea Community Boat, so it was worth the soaking !

We are very grateful to the Swansea Marina staff for their assistance - in particular to Mike Bond for his boat handling skills that enabled us to take the measurements and for sharing with us his knowledge of the River.

Another task recently completed was a full revision of the project Business Plan, with the assistance of Roy Tones from 'Communities Mean Business'.  We now have a very powerful document that identifies the required start-up costs and shows how Swansea Community Boat could be developed as a sustainable social enterprise. The Trust greatly appreciates the commitment and expertise that Roy brought to the project.

Following a workshop organised by HERIAN and Groundwork Wales, the Trust prepared a draft Local Interpretive Plan (LIP) for the Tawe River Navigation. This plan looks at how the Swansea Community Boat will be used to make the  heritage more accessible.
